Add Your Reply Domain Records in GoDaddy

GoDaddy’s DNS manager takes all four records from one screen. The only thing to watch is the Name field, which wants the part in front of your domain and nothing else.

Copy the real values from the domain screen in Know Reply before you start. Three of the four are unique to your domain.

Add the records

1. Sign in to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio and select the domain to open Domain Settings, then select DNS.
2. Select Add New Record, choose MX from the Type menu, enter reply in Name, mx.sendgrid.net in Value, and 10 in Priority.
3. Select Add New Record, choose CNAME, enter the host from the Know Reply screen with your domain removed, for example em1234.reply, and paste the SendGrid target in Value.
4. Repeat step 3 for s1._domainkey.reply and s2._domainkey.reply.
5. Select Save, or Save All Records if you added them together.

Enter reply, not reply.yourbrand.com. GoDaddy appends the domain for you, and the full name is what appears in the records table afterwards.

Two things that catch people out

The parked MX records. A GoDaddy domain that has never had email often carries MX records pointing at a GoDaddy mail service on the root. Leave them. They apply to yourbrand.com and have no effect on reply.yourbrand.com.

Timing. GoDaddy is slower to publish than most. Their own guidance is up to an hour for normal changes and up to 48 hours worldwide. In practice an hour is enough. If Check DNS in Know Reply still fails after that, the values are wrong rather than slow.

Then check it

Go back to the domain screen in Know Reply and click Check DNS. The screen names any record that is still missing or wrong.
